On Aug. 5, the Fairfield Board of Finance (BOF) unanimously voted in favor of a plan to immediately remove PCBs from the gymnasium walls of Riverfield Elementary School. PCBs are compounds which the EPA has linked to cancer. Tom Quinn, Chairman of the Riverfield Building Committee, characterized the PCBs at Riverfield as a non-threat to students, but said that immediate action would be prudent as a cost-control measure.
Dr. Title also said that starting in the Fall, the district will be developing a 10-year plan for facilities improvements at all Fairfield schools. Most notably, the portable classrooms at the Mill Hill and Holland Hill elementary schools will be demolished, in favor of renovations that create additional, permanent classrooms. Title cited several reasons for the district’s desire to phase out the portable classrooms, including security.
